Future-Proof Your Career: How to Stay Relevant in the Age of AI

I was made redundant from my dream job at age 52. I remember the initial shock and disbelief, and the anger, sadness and despair that followed. I thought at that age I was unemployable. My brother lovingly reassured me: ‘You’re over 50, you’re f….’

I employed a career coach to help me reset. I complained one day that I was spending a lot of time and effort writing applications for jobs I didn’t want, purely for financial reasons.

He said a magical word: ‘Stop’. And I did. I changed tack. Instead of applying for jobs I set about creating a lifestyle for myself around work and a business that I would enjoy. I also took on part time teaching at a university because in business there are shitty times where there is a lot of investment of time and money but no income.

That was over ten years ago. These days the rise of AI has created new challenges. It’s a game-changer that’s reshaping industries, roles, and the skills that are valued.

For many in midlife, this brings a mix of excitement and unease. On the one hand, AI can take tedious tasks off your plate. On the other, it raises uncomfortable questions: Will my role still exist in five years? Will younger, AI-savvy colleagues outpace me? Is it too late to adapt?

The answer to that last question is an emphatic no. In fact, midlife professionals have unique strengths—experience, judgment, networks—that technology can’t replicate. The key is to pair these with new skills and a forward-thinking mindset. Here are some tips:

1. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Psychologist Carol Dweck’s research shows that people who believe they can learn and improve at any age actually do. Rather than resisting AI, approach it with curiosity. Ask: How could this tool make me better at my job? How could it open new opportunities?

If you haven’t taken a course or learned a new skill in a while, now is the time. Platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and local universities offer affordable, flexible learning options.

2. Focus on Human-Centric Skills

While AI excels at pattern recognition, data crunching, and automation, it falls short in areas like empathy, creativity, critical thinking, and relationship-building. These “soft” skills are fast becoming the hard currency of the future workplace.

  • Communication: Clear writing and speaking stand out in an era of information overload.

  • Collaboration: The ability to work well with diverse teams is a huge differentiator.

  • Leadership: Guiding people through uncertainty is a skill every organisation needs.

3. Build Your Digital Fluency

You don’t have to become a coder, but you do need to be comfortable with the digital tools shaping your industry. Try experimenting with AI platforms like ChatGPT, Canva, or data visualisation software. The aim isn’t to master everything — it’s to become confident enough to adapt quickly.

4. Network Like Your Career Depends on It (Because It Does)

According to LinkedIn, up to 85% of jobs are filled via networking. Keep your professional relationships active. Attend events, join online groups, and connect with colleagues you haven’t spoken to in years. Your next opportunity might come from a casual conversation.

5. Be Open to Portfolio Careers

The traditional “one job for decades” model is fading. More midlife professionals are blending part-time work, consulting, and side projects. This not only diversifies your income but also keeps your skills fresh and relevant.

6. Prioritise Your Wellbeing

Future-proofing isn’t just about skills — it’s about stamina. Staying mentally sharp, physically healthy, and emotionally resilient makes you more adaptable and employable. Exercise, good sleep, and social connections aren’t luxuries; they’re career investments

Final Thought The future of work isn’t about competing with AI—it’s about complementing it. Midlife isn’t a disadvantage; it’s an asset. You bring decades of lived experience, nuanced judgment, and perspective that no algorithm can match. Pair that with adaptability, and you won’t just survive the AI era—you’ll thrive in it.
